This town, the most important in the Arezzo Tiber Valley, is the birthplace of Piero della Francesca. Due to its strategic position, Sansepolcro was the object of lengthy contention between Guelphs and Ghibellines and was damaged by battles and powerful earthquakes.
Despite the lesions of time, the urban layout inside the town walls is still medieval, enriched over the centuries with noble Renaissance and Baroque buildings. After having visited the house of Piero della Francesca, an illustrious artist born in this town at the beginning of the 15th century, one can see some of his works in the Civic Museum together with many other famous paintings. The Romanesque St. John the Evangelist Cathedral is one of the more interesting buildings. Piazza Torre di Berta is in the heart of the historical centre.
