The High Tiber valley was a meeting point between Umbrian and Etruscan, and Byzantine and Lombard civilizations. The influences of the various peoples can be seen in the architecture, in the artisan traditions and in the cuisine. Roman nobility built villas here, then feudatories and abbots erected castles and monasteries. It was here that Michelangelo and Piero della Francesca were born. Anghiari, one of Italy's most beautiful villages, is in Valtiberina as well as river ports like Pieve Santo Stefano, Camaldolite abbeys and Franciscan convents. Small museums reveal the cultural activities of the area during the various ages: from Rosso Fiorentino to Della Robbia and going on to Piero della Francesca, Jacopo della Quercia and Pontormo. The nature reserves that particularly stand out are those at Sasso di Simone in Sestino, the Rognosi Mountains, the Alpe della Luna Reserve and Mount Nero.
