The city of Cortona is definitely not to be missed, standing, with its immortal charm, on the hill that embraces it and from where you can see as far as Lake Trasimeno and the whole of the Valdichiana.
There are a myriad of things to do in this magnificent place, from visiting the Archaeological Park and Etruscan Museum to walking in the splendid Medieval centre, or urban trekking to Saint Margaret's Sanctuary. The main streets of the centre are flanked by beautiful bars, handicraft shops, characteristic restaurants and many art galleries. The two main adjoining squares are particularly beautiful: Piazza della Repubblica, with its impressive stairway going into the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo, and Piazza Signorelli overlooked by the homonymous Theatre and Etruscan and Cortona City Museum (MAEC).
Dishes linked to rural life stand out among Cortona specialities, particularly pici (pasta) in meat sauce, bread soup and the inevitable Florentine Chianina steak. Other delights can also be found in the local restaurants, such as pappardelle with hare or mushrooms and wild boar stew. All accompanied with local desserts and vintage wines, including Cortona DOC.
