Anghiari Itinerary

One of Italy's most beautiful villages, Anghiari climbs up the hill between the Tiber River and Sovara Torrent. In the Lombard era (VII century), it was a fortified castle. The city was conquered in 1440 by the Florentines at the famous Battle of Anghiari.

A staircase leads from Piazza Baldaccio to St. Mary of Graces church with the civic clock tower in front. Nearby is Palazzo Pretorio (1300), now the Town hall, while further south is the Cassero Tower (1337). The National Palazzo Taglieschi Museum is in the heart of the historical centre housing Tuscan and Umbrian paintings and wooden sculptures. In front is the Palazzo della Battaglia and the Memory and Landscape Museum in the sixteenth century Palazzo del Marzocco which, besides displaying a reconstruction of the famous lost painting by Leonardo da Vinci depicting the Battle of Anghiari, also offers items and stories from every era. Churches, castles and villas can be found in the surrounding area.
