Cameo Italiano: tradition and new entries

In Victorian times, cameos were at the peak of popularity as a gem for the most important jewellery and, for 210 years, they were only made on agate or hard stones until a sailor brought some sea shells back to Torre del Greco after a journey to Africa and America.
Here, several master engravers from Torre who worked with agate found that the shading on the types of shell that the sailor had brought was similar to Cornelian and Sardonyx agate and, since then, cameos have been engraved on sea shell and exclusively at Torre del Greco.
It was exactly here that the Di Luca family’s experience began. Specialized in shell cameo production for 3 generations, the company works with an ancient tool, the burin.
Moreover, in 2012, the company launched the “Italian cameo” project to modernize the concept of cameo with the support of 35 Torre del Greco artists who were well able to re-invent the design of these items, breaking down the boundaries between classic jewellery and current fashion.
At GoldItaly, Cameo Italiano will be presenting its latest entries in the hand-engraved cameo line as well as its Charme collection, fashionable and youthful items with smooth lines and modern engravings, and the Carousel collection, an explosion of colours reminiscent of the fantastic world of roundabouts.
The newly generated Anne line, inspired by classic and romantic iconography and re-interpreted with an imposing and enthralling mood, and the Sacred collection with its style details that recall religious themes, thus blending devotion and fashion, will also be on display.
